BRITAIN’S LESSER-KNOWN ALLIES IN WORLD WAR 1
A talk by Dr Keith Williams
Dr. Keith Williams has been a member of the Club since 2012. A trained historian, Keith obtained his Doctorate from Cardiff University. Since retiring from a successful business career in 2001 he has enjoyed researching and writing on mainly military topics covering the period from 1850 to 1920. He is a member of the Society of Authors, a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Marketors and of the Worshipful Company of Needlemakers and is a member of the East India Club.
When asked about Britain’s allies in World War 1, most people find it difficult to name any but the major nations involved, France, Russia and the USA. However, excluding the participation of the members of the British and French Empires and their colonies, there were a number of smaller independent nations that entered the war against Germany and its allies. This talk identifies these, looks at their reasons for supporting the Allied cause, and examines the extent of their participation
If you wish to attend, please email the office on admin@cardiffandcountyclub.com or telephone 02920 220846
The meeting is open to all members of the Club and their guests. There is no limit to the number of guests members may wish to invite.
The intention is to hold the talk in the upstairs committee room starting promptly at 12.30, followed by a two-course lunch either in the Main Dining Room or the Westgate Room, depending on numbers. The lunch menu will be Cheese Soufflé followed by Loin of Pork. A fish option is available instead of pork, but this must be ordered in advance direct with the Club.
A complimentary glass of Prosecco will be served from 12.00
The cost of the event will be £38, and this will be debited to members’ cards. A generous contribution is included within the price towards the Army Benevolent Fund which aims to provide help and support to the Army family by awarding grants to individuals or families where needed.
